Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT)

Everything within and around us is made up of energy.  We are all part of one great energy field.

That the body can be healed through the power of the mind is becoming increasingly understood.  EFT is an energy therapy that works on the less widely understood principle that we can heal the mind through the body.

EFT is a form of energy psychology, which shares the principles of acupuncture.   Those principles recognise the existence and flow of energy within us as being responsible for our overall health – physical, mental and emotional.  Energy therapies, whether with a long history, like acupuncture and shiatsu, or more recent, like EFT, all subscribe to the idea of energy pathways running through the body.  These pathways, or meridians, relay information through the whole system.

Energy within the meridians registers emotions, as well as physical sensations.  The meridian system and our state of mind are  inextricably linked. Blockages to this system can occur through either physical or emotional trauma.  Such blockages cause internal disruption and stress and can eventually lead to illness and disease.

EFT views our emotional reactions as the direct result of disturbance within the energy system.  Negative thoughts and traumatic memories cause an energy block within the body, which we then experience as a negative emotion.  Once the disruption to the energy flow is cleared, memories and unhelpful thoughts cease to hold their original emotional intensity and we can no longer feel the negative emotions associated with them.

Along each meridian there are key points, commonly known as acupuncture or acupressure points.   The two end points of each meridian channel run close to the surface of the skin.  EFT uses these end points to tap on to clear energy and emotional blockages.

EFT was developed by Gary Craig, an engineer turned ‘personal trainer’.  He used NLP to help people sort emotional traumas until he discovered a revolutionary technique developed by a clinical psychologist, Dr Roger Callahan. Inspired by acupuncture and the modern day practice of kinesiology, Callahan had devised a complete system of psychological healing known as Thought Field Therapy.  By tapping on meridian points, TFT was able to eliminate negative emotions, beliefs and traumatic memories rapidly and often permanently.

He happened on this by chance.  He had been treating a client for her profound fear of water for two years, with little success.  Whatever his reason for doing so - and various versions of the story exist – he suggested she tap on the meridian point under her eye while she focused on her fear of water.  The result was that her fear was rapidly removed and the phobia never returned.  Callahan spent the next ten years developing his therapy.

Having studied with Callahan, Gary Craig went on to develop EFT.

Simple, non-invasive and surprisingly quick, I use EFT to complement hypnotherapy.  EFT tapping is surprisingly relaxing, hypnotic even, in its effect.  The most powerful link between hypnotherapy and EFT, however, is the assertion that body and mind are one.  Disruption to one causes disruption to the other.
