You may well have heard people refer to themselves as ‘creatures of habit’ – an observation that is true of all of us. As we grow up we learn ways of behaving and coping with the world. We learn by imitating other people and we learn from experiment. If something works, we repeat it. By repeating it we ensure that it is stored it in our subconscious. It is then available to us and triggered automatically in response to given situations.
Being ‘creatures of habit’ saves us a lot of time and energy. If we had to work out anew how to respond to a situation every time we encountered it, we would be exhausted. However, it may also mean that we get stuck in ways of behaving that become less and less appropriate as time goes by. A behaviour that is acceptable in a child, for example, becomes out of place in a teenager or an adult.
What is now an unwanted habit began as a solution to a problem. That problem was a situation in which, for whatever reason, you experienced feelings of discomfort. Biting your nails, sucking your thumb, or whatever, began as a response to uncomfortable feelings of stress and anxiety. This habit brought you relief from those feelings and, stored in your unconscious mind, has continued to do so.
If you now feel it is time to change that habit, I can help you. Because, like all habits, it is maintained by your unconscious, hypnosis, EFT and NLP can be very effective at helping you to make the change. I can help you to let it go, to deal with any remaining underlying anxiety that led to your adopting the habit and offer you constructive ways in which to deal with stress and anxiety in the future.
You may be reading this as a parent of a child who has adopted an unhelpful habit. I am happy to work with children – of 7 years old and upwards – and young people. It is essential that they themselves want to be rid of the habit and don’t feel forced into letting it go.
