Hypnosis

Hypnosis is not magic but its transformations can be magical.

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which all of us have experienced. We all live in “our own world” at times, unconscious of the wider world around us – when we are absorbed in a book or newspaper, watching television, staring out of the window, drifting in that half-asleep half-awake state before we sleep or wake up properly, or driving to work and wondering how we got there! They are all forms of trance, an altered state that we can learn to enter at will.

Control

We relax, ‘let go’ and allow ourselves to enter this state. However deeply we relax, we are always in control. We can choose to return to a normal state of awareness at any time we wish. The therapist can help us, but cannot control us.

Brain waves

So what is this hypnotic state? It is called the alpha state, a state in which our brain goes into a different ‘gear’ from our waking state, or our deeper sleeping states. Our brain waves slow down to less than half the rate of our active, waking state.

The alpha state

This is a highly creative state. We are deeply and pleasantly relaxed and our unconscious mind opens up. In this state we can counter negative and unhelpful states of mind – either with the help of a therapist, or by self- suggestion. Stress melts away and thoughts, ideas and solutions to problems arrive, as if by magic!

Throughout history, inventors, musicians and artists have used the alpha state – often referred to as ‘dreamlike’ by them. Edison sat with a steel ball in his lap and tied to his finger. When the ball dropped he was jolted back to waking consciousness. Newton solved his maths problems. Mozart talked of his compositions being formed like dreams. Goethe and Coleridge created poems in what we now call the alpha state. Eddie Braben even used a similar technique to help him write scripts for Morecambe and Wise!
