Sport

Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are probably right. Henry Ford

As in the rest of your life, your performance in sport flows directly from your patterns of belief and thought. Your body is a precise reflection of your thoughts. It is like a computer that responds perfectly to its programming and those programs are stored in the unconscious.

Human beings are creatures of habit. Given the same circumstances, we repeat the same responses. Your future performance will be the same as your present performance until you change any unhelpful, limiting patterns and replace them with empowering ones.

There is a saying, ‘Sport is played with the body, but only if the mind gets out of the way.’ What is really needed is for body and mind to be on the same team, and, even more importantly, for the conscious and unconscious parts of your mind to be working together. If your conscious intention is to hit a golf ball more accurately or further, then you have to have an unconscious mindset that supports that intention. When the opposition scores a goal, all team members need the mental skills to adopt a mindset that keeps ‘heads up’ and that ensures they play in a way that will achieve a win for the team. .

Sports training and coaching in the UK still focuses largely on fitness and physical skills and techniques. Most sportsmen and women are at the stage of having a (more or less) ‘trained technique’ and an ‘untrained brain’. To achieve peak performance both technique and brain need to be ‘trained’. Performance is delivered by the mind and, under pressure, the mind will give up before the body.

As far back as 1970, when the Soviets swept the Olympics, researchers discovered that it was not steroids that made them superior to the US athletes, but mental exercises. American athletes focused 100% of their training on physical activity. The Soviets spent only about 25% on comparable activities and 75% on deep relaxation and mental rehearsal.

The good news is that, using NLP, hypnosis and powerful visualisation, I can help you to relax deeply and to learn new and powerful thinking patterns. These will remove blocks to success, build confidence, enhance performance and ensure you fulfil your potential. Sustained mental practice, made as real as possible, creates real life success.

When preparing to run a race in America, I used the breathing techniques and visualisation and achieved a personal best. The race felt easy mentally. I enjoyed it every step and attribute a great deal of that to your techniques. Lucy G.
